I love you guys .Adriana from Milano !
The first stones of the "cathedral" of Milan were laid in the City in the year 300. It was a different structure and the architect was different. Much later on in the 1400's, the Duke of Milan, Leonardo da Vinci, the Royal Sforza family, ecc. were the ones who formed the church we call "Duomo" that we see and admire today, of every day~
Lovely video, I'm happy you liked my city.
The Duomo was completed in 1928 and it is completely made of marble, marmo di Candoglia. It is also the only Cathedral in the world to own its quarry… so that they'll have all the marble necessary for the repairs.
Until end of 1800 Milan was surrounded by a web of canals that were used to transport goods and food supplies all over from the countryland, the Duchy of Milan nation and in other nations thru nearby rivers that bring directly to Swiss at North, and to river Po, the longest in Italy at South.
Po river is a straight waterway from Turin and the mountains bordering France to West and to Adriatic sea and Venice to East. This fact made Milan a very rich city. Once there was a canal that took directly to the Dome, in order to unload materials and supplies necessary to build it.
Canals you visited are a pale memory of what once it was the web of canals in Milan, challenging even cities like Amsterdam or Venice, but if you ask for, there is still one canal with a weir built by Leonardo Da Vinci in person as Engineers Director. It was the first in the world with barrage capacity enhanced by water pressure itself (the only invention by Leonardo still used nowadays everywhere) and weir name is "Chiusa dell'Incoronata".
I actually don't go to Duomo often to see, but just stay in my house for random stuff .-.
getting water into the city during Antiquity was done by large aqueducts
Roman empire was known for its large water systems (substrico's built on ground level, arches built through the city carrying water called arcades, etc.) they also had pipe systems with siphons
look up Frontinus 'on the water supply of rome' if you are interested
